Buy Fresh Buy Local supports the East Campus Discovery Days and Farmers Market. 

The event, which was put on by those in the university’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, featured vendors and tents ranging from hands-on science experiments, bee keeping demonstrations, locally grown plants and produce, live music, and more, combining fun and learning in way that the entire family can enjoy.

“The idea here is to engage learners of all ages,” Michael Boehm, Vice Chancellor of UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said. “We really believe that everybody is a learner.”

The family-friendly events are “part farmers market, and part science-fair,” according to event manager Jordan Slagle, with 50+ booths slated to be set up on the East Campus Mall from from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 8, July 13 and Aug. 10.

Aside from educational activities, there will also be food trucks, live music and vendors selling many goods and products. Some will sell goods such as flowers, handmade jewelry and bath products, while others will sell baked goods and coffee.

The fun, family-friendly events are an opportunity for community members to visit East Campus and learn about research, teaching and extension work within the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The events also provide science and agricultural literacy activities for youth.

“I think it is such a great way that we can show off all of the amazing things that are going on on east campus,” said Jessie Brophy, IANR director of external engagement and partnerships.

As summer rolls around, the East Campus Discovery Days kick off next weekend! IANR Vice Chancellor Mike Boehm previews what attendees can expect.

“It’s been fun to see this event grow and evolve over the years,” Brophy said. “It’s almost more like a festival than a farmers market, and it’s become of one my favorite events of the year.”
